Contractions in Portuguese

Oi/Olá Pessoal!
Today’s post was suggested by a student and it covers one aspect of learning Portuguese that has students somewhat confused: the contractions.

1. Em – in, on or at

em + o = no
em + a = na
em + os = nos
em + as = nas

 O cachorro está na sala.(Br)  O cão está na sala (Pt). – My backback is in the bedroom.
Ele trabalha na empresa EFR. – He works at EFR company.

2. Em + um, uma, uns , umas - in a

em + um = num
em + uma = numa
em + uns = nuns
em + umas = numas

Ele mora num apartamento. – He lives in an apartment.
Ela trabalha numa empresa – she works in a company.

3. De – of or from

de + o = do
de + a = da
de + os = dos
de + as = das

Ela é do Brasil. – She is from Brazil.
A cadeira é feita de plástico. – The chair is made of plastic.

4. Por – by, through or for

por + o = pelo
por + a = pela
por + os  = pelos
por + as = pelas

O artigo foi escrito pelo professor. – The article was written by the teacher.
Vou te dizer isto pela última vez. – I’m going to tell you this for the last time.

5. A – at or to

a + o = ao
a + a = à
a + os = aos
a + as = às

Você foi ao teatro ontem? – Did you go to the theater yesterday?
Ela foi à escola a pé. – She went to school on foot.
Esta música é dedicada aos meus colegas de turma. – This song is dedicated to my classmates.

We all mess up one day or the other so it is very important to be able to say I’m sorry , so what a better way to start our 2014 with this  post about apologizing.

     Pedindo Desculpas – Apologizing

Desculpe. – I’m sorry.
Foi sem querer. – I didn’t mean to do that.
Me desculpe por (Br) … Desculpe-me por (Pt)  – I’m sorry for…
Peço desculpas por… – I apologize for…
Por favor aceite minhas desculpas. – Please accept my apologies.
Não fiz por querer. – I didn’t do it on purpose.
Eu sei, isso não tem perdão, mas… – I know this is unforgivable, but…
Não sei o que dizer. – I don’t know what to say.
Não vai se repetir. – This is not going to happen again.
Juro que nunca mais faço isso. – I swear I won’t do it again.

Verbo TER vs Verb TO BE

Olá / Oi Pessoal !

When we are learning other language, we have tendency to translate the sentences in our native language to the new language we are speaking.Sometimes it works but most of times it doesn’t.

For exemple the verb to have- ter in Portuguese is widely used, showing up a lot in terms of our daily lives and idiomatic expressions. The verb to have, which would be its corresponding English, has a more restricted use, not appearing a lot in idiomatic expressions. The verb to be, on the other hand, covers a large area in English meaning, appearing in many expressions of everyday life, similar to the Portuguese verb ter-to have. Let’s see some exemples verb ter in Portuguese and to be in English.

Quantos anos você tem? - How old are you?
Você tem certeza? - Are you sure?
Você tem razão. - You are right.
Não tenho medo de cachorros. (br) - I'm not afraid of dogs.

Não tenho medo de cães. (pt) - I'm not afraid of dogs.

O que é que tem de errado? - What's wrong?
Não tive culpa disso. - It wasn't my fault.
Tivemos sorte. - We were lucky.
Tenha cuidado. - Be careful.
Tenho pena deles (sinto por eles). - I feel sorry for them.
Isto não tem graça. - That's not funny.
Ela tem vergonha de falar inglês. - She's too shy to speak English.
Você tem que ter paciência. - You must be patient.
Ele tem facilidade para línguas.  - He's good at languages.
Este quarto tem 3 metros de largura por 4 de comprimento. - This room is 3 meters wide by 4 meters long.

make an agreement - fazer um acordo
make an announcement (to) - fazer uma comunicação oficial
make an appointment (with) - marcar uma consulta (doctor); marcar uma hora
make arrangements (for) - fazer preparos
make an attempt (to) - fazer uma tentativa
make the bed - fazer a cama
make breakfast (dinner, a sandwich) - preparar o café da manhã BR;

                                                             preparar o pequeno almoço PT

make a choice - fazer uma escolha

make a clean copy - passar a limpo

make it clear (to) - deixar claro
